Yorkie Westie Mix

The Yorkie Westie is a popular hybrid, made by crossing two very popular dog breeds, the Yorkshire Terrier, and the West Highland White Terrier. 

Before we talk about the Yorkie Westie Mix, let’s first talk about the characteristics of the two parent breeds so that we know what to expect of the resulting offspring. 

Characteristics of the West Highland White Terrier 

This dog is commonly known as the Westie, and it has a strong willed, but friendly personality.  The coat is a very bright white when properly cared for.  This dog’s temperament is typical for a terrier, spunky, determined, and devoted.  A small dog that has been known to excel in agility and obedience trials. 

This dog originated in Poltalloch Scotland, and was originally called the Poltalloch Terrier.  Other names this breed has gone by include the Roseneath Terrier. 

This dog did not show up in a United States dog show until 1906 under the Roseneath name.  In 1909 the name was changed to West Highland White Terrier. 

This dog has a dense undercoat and a rough outer coat.  It needs daily brushing and regular clipping.  It is about 10 to 11 inches tall. 

Characteristics of the Yorkshire Terrier  

The Yorkie originally comes from Yorkshire England and is black and tan in color.  It weighs only 7 pounds and has straight hair, and is considered to be hypoallergenic. 

  

They belong to the Toy Group and are the second most popular dog breed in America.   

These dogs travel well and make great house pets. Their long coats require regular brushing.  The AKC first recognized them in 1885.  

Yorkie Westie Mix Characteristics

The color can vary between the black and tan of the Yorkie to the pure white of the Westie. 

Height: 

This mix usually stands less than 10 inches tall. 

Weight: 

Normally weight for a Yorkie Westie Mix is about 6-9 pounds.

Since both parent breeds are terriers, the offspring retain the terrier attitude
