Yorkie Haircuts
Giving Yorkie haircuts are fun and a great way
to bond with your dog. If you spend money at a dog
groomers, but no longer want to or can afford it, then
try to groom your own dog.
I started off doing this a few years ago and now
can give a pretty good hair cut. I urge you to
start trimming your own Yorkie’s hair.
You will NOT be perfect at first, but everyone
has to start somewhere and remember the hair will grow
back if you make a mistake.
All you need to get starting giving a haircut is
an inexpensive pair of clippers with various attachments
that you can get from Walgreens. You will also need
a blunt tipped scissors for trimming the
face.
Learning To Groom Yorkies
Some people that the easy route and just use a
clippers to trim their dog all over. So remember,
that there is not just one right way to trim a
Yorkie. Whatever looks best to you just do
it.
I normally use the clippers on the body and use
a blunt tipped scissors for the head and legs so I can
leave that hair longer.
If you let your Yorkie outside and it is wet
outside or muddy, you may want to trim the leg hair
closer so your dog stays a little
cleaner.
Give Your Yorkie A Bath
Remember, it is always a great idea to give your
dog a bath before grooming and let them dry. This
may not seem like it would make a huge difference, but I
often find that giving hair cuts are much easier this
way.
Remember to only use a blunt tipped scissors to
trim around the eyes and nose. Yorkies love to turn
their heads quickly and you don’t want any
accidents.
If you do end up giving your Yorkie a trim, let
me know and I’ll post a picture of your Yorkie hair cut
on this website.
Yorkie cuts can vary tremendously depending on
what look you want and what groomer you use.
I trim my yorkies myself, and you should to if
you are not going to show them. Trimming your yorkie
might seem overwhelming for a person who hasn’t trimmed
hair before.
But if you cut your children’s hair you are
already know a lot about grooming, and grooming a dog is
very similar to grooming a human.
Grooming Equipment
While you might not need expensive equipment to
do a good job, you do need quality equipment if you want
to do a good job at Yorkie haircuts.
Good quality grooming equipment doesn’t cost a
lot, so you should at least have a clippers, a scissors,
and a blunt ended scissors. It is also easier to
trim long-haired Yorkies after you have given them a nice
bath.
Yorkie Grooming Tip!
If possible, don’t trim your Yorkie on the floor
or your bed. You will likely be very uncomfortable
in these positions if you do and you will get tired
quickly and make more mistakes.
Yorkie Cuts
If you do show your Yorkies, it is worth it to
have a professional dog groomer cut the dog’s
hair.
I normally start off with a clippers and trim
the hair on the legs to 1 1/2 to 2 inches and the body 2
inches. Some people may choose to keep the hair longer,
so if this is you, use a scissors for the belly
area.
Yorkie Grooming Tip!
I always make sure to use the clipper guard and
don’t trim free hand at all, this will virtually
guarantee that your dog will not have any bald
patches.
Trimming The Head
Trimming the head always seems to take the most
amount of time for me. I start out by combing out
all the hair around the head and give what could be
described as a nice round bowl cut.
I just try to make sure that the head appears as
round as possible.
Then I use the blunt tipped scissors to trim
around the eyes and nose to keep hair out of the
eyes.
I always keep a hemostat (small clamp) on hand
which is good for pulling hair out of ear canals, which
allows lots of fresh air in. (some people warn against
this, but I have not had any problems so
far)
Yorkie haircuts don’t have to be overly
complicated. As Nike says, just do it! I urge
you to start doing them by yourself and experiment with
different Yorkie cuts, and give yourself permission to
screw up!
