31 Facts About Yorkies - America's Best Dog Breed

Micro Yorkie

Micro Yorkies can go by many different names.  You may see them advertised as Teacup Yorkies, Doll Faced Yorkies, or any combination of these like Tiny Teacup Yorkies.

Since these breeders don’t go by the naming standards they can make up any name they want.  Because of this you have to be very careful and make sure you know the background of the dog you are buying.

These people do not follow the ethics code from the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America.

The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America actually had to make a code stating that advertising these dogs as Micro Yorkies, Teacup Yorkies, or Doll Face Yorkies was not ethical.

So anyone selling dogs by these names are not following the basic standards as set forth by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America.

Also remember these dogs are likely not the healthiest Yorkshire Terriers either.  These dogs are unnaturally small and there is a lot of inbreeding going on with these tiny dogs so many genetic problems often result.

A Micro Yorkie generally will cost you about $3000 dollars, so you have to think if spending this much money on a dog of questionable quality is worth it.

I know of one lady who was burned twice by breeders of these tiny dogs.  They can guarantee their health for only so long.  If they tell you these dogs live to be 14 to 15 years old they are probably lying to you.

Most of these dogs die young simply because they don’t have the ability to thrive.  Short muzzles give the breathing problems, and the apple shaped head is actually a form of hydrocephalus.

Buying A Micro Yorkie

So if you still want to buy a Micro Yorkie here are some tips to help you get the best one.

  1. Contact at least three breeders of these dogs and ask them lots of questions, like how long they have been breeding dogs, do they only have purebred Yorkies, and do they register their offspring?
  2. Ask for three references from at least three buyers.  References are often the best indicator to see if the breeder is reputable.
  3. Go to some online pet forums or do a search on the Internet.  Perhaps someone has posted some information about this breeder that is either good or bad.
  4. Also make sure you get some sort of health guarantee.  They should stand behind their dogs.
