A Dachshund Yorkie is not a very commonly found cross, but some people desire this dog because of its unique characteristics. 

A Dachshund Yorkie cross is make by breeding a Yorkshire Terrier and a Dachshund.  In order to better examine the resulting offspring lets first examine what the two parent breeds bring to the table. 

Dachshund – Characteristics It Brings To the Crossbreed 

The Dachshund, whose name means “badger dog” in German is a very unique dog.  Originally used for hunting in small burrows, it has a very good sense of smell and a small size.  Today’s Dachshund remains a very good hunter. 

It is one of the most popular dog breeds in American, and it was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.  They come in three different coat varieties, the Smooth, Wirehaired, and Longhaired.  They also come in two different sizes, the Miniature and Standard. 

These dogs have a playful temperament and are great companions.  Their coats require regular grooming and it varies by what type of coat your dog has.

Standard sizes weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, and the Miniatures weigh less than 11 pounds.

Yorkshire Terrier – Characteristics It Brings To The Crossbreed 

The Yorkie originally comes from Yorkshire England and is black and tan in color.  It weighs only 7 pounds and has straight hair, and is also considered to be hypoallergenic like the Bichon Frise.   

They belong to the Toy Group and are the second most popular dog breed in America.   

These dogs travel well and make great house pets.  Their long coats require regular brushing.  The AKC first recognized them in 1885.

Due to the number of varieties (sizes and coats) of Dachshunds, the resulting cross with the Yorkie can be quite variable. 

Temperament 

Since both parent breeds have great temperaments you would expect any resulting crossbreeds to also have a great demeanor. 

Weight 

These Dachshund Yorkie crossbreeds can weigh anywhere between 7 and 25 pounds. 

Height

These crossbreeds are usually less than 12 inches high, but this can vary greatly. 

Coat Color 

Dachshunds can come in a variety of coat colors, but the crossbreeds probably will have some white and black on them.
