Bichon Yorkie

Traits of The Bichon Yorkie Cross

Bichon Yorkie Mix is sometimes called a Yochon.  This mix combines the Yorkshire Terrier and the Bichon Frise.

We will talk about characteristics of the cross, but first we have to examine the characteristics of the parent breeds so we can better understand the resulting crossbreed.

Bichon Frise – Characteristics it Brings To the Crossbreed

The Bichon Frise is a lap dog that is larger than a Maltese.  It is a non-shedding dog that needs daily grooming.  Adults weigh about 10 to 18 pounds and reach 12 inches tall.  They have a cheerful temperament and live to be 12 to 13 years old.

The Bichon Frise has white curly hair and is considered to be hypoallergenic.  It is said that it sometimes resembles a cotton ball because of its curled double coat.  The outer coat is textured, and the undercoat is very silky.

This breed originated in the 1200’s and is descended from the Water Spaniel.  It is believed that Spanish sailors carried this dog around the world.  Eventually 16th century French royalty fell in love with the dog.  The AKC first recognized the breed in 1972.

Yorkshire Terrier – Characteristics It Brings To The Crossbreed

The Yorkie originally comes from Yorkshire England and is black and tan in color.  It weighs only 7 pounds and has straight hair, and is also considered to be hypoallergenic like the Bichon Frise.

They belong to the Toy Group and are the second most popular dog breed in America.

These dogs travel well and make great house pets. Their long coats require regular brushing.  The AKC first recognized them in 1885.
